Pain points & solutions

Creating a platform capable of supporting highly varied content required balancing flexibility, usability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability while ensuring the experience remained consistent throughout.
Projects varied dramatically in scale and complexity. Some required only a single page, while others contained extensive resources and content collections, making it difficult to create a single structure that supported every scenario.
Supporting multiple content types within shared categories introduced technical complexity. Articles, charts, maps, reports, and project materials needed to coexist inside the same ecosystem without creating confusion for users or administrators.
Accessibility remained a central requirement throughout development. Every feature, structure, and content model needed to support users with different abilities while maintaining usability, performance, and compliance across the platform.
Solutions tested

Project structures that grow with the content

A tab-based project system was developed to support content of varying complexity. Smaller initiatives could remain on a single page, while larger initiatives could expand into structured subpages without requiring separate websites or platforms.

Flexible publishing without technical barriers

Custom controls made it possible to show, hide, and configure sections according to content needs. This flexibility allowed teams to manage diverse experiences within the same framework while keeping publishing workflows simple and intuitive.

Accessibility built into the management process

An accessibility evaluation tool was developed to help teams continually review and improve content according to WCAG 2.2 standards. This approach transformed accessibility from a one-time requirement into an ongoing and measurable process.

A framework for future digital ecosystems

A minisite framework and assessment methodology helped determine when projects required expanded structures. Publishing guidance and reusable templates ensured new sections could be launched consistently while preserving website cohesion.

Supporting future growth

The final platform provides a flexible, accessible, and scalable foundation capable of supporting Vital Village's diverse content ecosystem.

Custom project structures, adaptable publishing tools, minisite frameworks, and accessibility management features allow teams to manage content confidently within a single environment. Rather than creating separate websites whenever new needs emerge, the platform can evolve naturally alongside the organization.

The result is an engaging experience that remains easy to navigate while supporting long-term growth and independent content management.
